Midnight Oil

from age 13 years and up | about 45-55 min

In Liz Kinoshita's work, it is impossible to avoid the enticing pulse and rhythm that both occupies and surrounds the room.

Midnight Oil is an offering to anyone who may feel like they are running on fumes, keeping up with the pace of ambitions for oneself or one's loved ones.

It is a moment to reflect on the drive that comes at night, the questions, the confrontations, on how this world was formed, when burning one's last reserves of fuel...  And it is a celebration of resiliency, of being able to hold one another through the dark times, of gratitude for playfully pushing each other past boundaries that hurt no one, of cultivating justified fury, with grace.

In this intensely virtuosic work, the audience gathers around all four sides of the stage. In the middle, dance and choreography arise, making the whole room come alive.

The music in the piece is created by producer George Lewis Jr, better known as Twin Shadow. Here you can listen to his music in Spotify, with about 100 million plays on the top five songs.

Liz Kinoshita is a successful choreographer known for her innovative, imaginative and often singing dance performances. She was born in Toronto, Canada but has lived and worked in Europe since 2002.

Kinoshita's artistic style is characterized by her ability to mix different types of expression and techniques to create something entirely new. She often finds inspiration in music and sound (pop/rock/musical), which often leads the dancer to sing, sound and speak through her dancing. Her works are known to have an underlying tone of thought-provoking and inspirational content for the audience to carry with them.

Kinoshita's works have been performed all over the world. Her most famous piece, "Volcano", explores the concept of globetrotting and our way of life, based on the 2010 eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull. She has also been part of the artistic team for West Side Story on Broadway and created the work "Radical Empathy" for The Danish Performing Arts School.

Midnight Oil brings the audience physically close to Norrdans’ international ensemble and emphasizes the importance of music and sound in her work. Her unique style of dancing, combined with her love of music, has made her a favorite among audiences worldwide.

Twin Shadow, the stage name of Dominican-American George Lewis Jr., is a captivating music producer known for mixing elements of new wave, synthpop and indie rock into his musical creations.
