Mozambican Star Choreographer Creates Intense New Work for Norrdans

Norrdans presents Knocking, a new work by choreographer Horácio Macuacua. The world premiere takes place on March 6 at Härnösand Theatre.

Mozambican choreographer Horácio Macuacua has gained international recognition for a choreographic language marked by precision, musicality, and physical intensity. His work moves between structure and spontaneity, where movement and rhythm are closely intertwined.

“I want to share emotions. I want to work with energy and presence. If the audience feels something, then that is enough,” says Horácio Macuacua.

Knocking explores rhythm as a physical force — not merely as sound, but as movement, breath, and energy. The work unfolds through an intense and ever-changing landscape where form, musicality, and strong physical presence converge.

“In Knocking, rhythm is not something we hear, but something we experience through the bodies on stage. It is a work that engages directly with perception, energy, and presence,” says Martin Forsberg, Head of Dance and Artistic Director of Norrdans.

The performance is created in close collaboration with composer and DJ Nandele Maguni, whose musical practice moves between electronic soundscapes, rhythmic structures, and texture. The music does not function as accompaniment, but as an active and driving force within the work.

The costume design is created by Hanna Kisch, whose artistic practice often revolves around materiality, the body, and visual composition. Here, costume and movement interact in shaping the scenic world of the piece. The lighting design by Sascha Görg forms another central layer of the performance, where space, rhythm, and perception are shaped through shifts in light and intensity.

Following the premiere in Härnösand, the production will tour across northern Sweden, Stockholm, and Trondheim.
