Community Project: female (with) space

What do we dream of?
What do we long for?

In the participatory intergenerational project "female (with) space" we, a group of eight women from the Sundsvall Region, have explored what spaces dance improvisation, instantly composed,  creates for us to relate to each other in ways radically different than our status quo.

In total, there will be three performance occasions. Two in central Sundsvall and one at Bureplatsen. A dance walk from Hedbergskaparken through central Sundsvall with a final station at Kulturmagasinet and the interactive exhibition "Future Worlds", as well as a performance and picnic at Bureplatsen. On the latter occasion, it will be possible to buy vegetarian lunch on site (limited number).

The founder of the project is the dancer and choreographer Polena Kolia Petersen, who emphasizes that the community project is created together by the women who participate, it is important that everyone's voice is heard. She herself has chosen not to lead the group but instead participate as one of the dancers.

"I have a great interest in exploring how the anchoring of dance in everyday life can enable us to develop more sustainable structures for a common future", says Polena.

Polena Kolia Petersen has an interest in creating and exploring processes in relationships. Her artistic dance practice has a physical, aesthetic and political basis. Her work often addresses the relationship between artist, audience and dance.

Like few other art forms, dance is exceptional in connecting people across language, ethnicity, class divisions; you name it. Dance doesn’t care about barriers or boundaries. When we move, you are moved too, if not physically, then mentally. But often both. Through dance, we move closer to each other and into new exciting directions.

But what does this mean? Well, it means that we work and play and engage with communities or groups with movement as a physical tool for communication. We let people experience dance in all sorts of ways. Perhaps we’ll come to your home and perform there. Or we meet in a gymnasium or the town square.
